Massive cyclone in India leaves a destructive trail.
Some half a million people were evacuated from the southeastern Indian coast as Cyclone Phailin, a tropical storm from the Bay of Bengal, bore down on India. The states of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, both of which have large coastal populations, were on high alert ahead of the storm’s expected arrival.
Shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday, Indian weather officials said the eye of the cyclone was crossing the Orissa coast. Many have feared the storm — and the potential destruction it could cause — could be comparable to a deadly Super Cyclone that hit India in 1999
