Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. Job 2:8
This is my ‘scratching’ story comparing to that of Job, an ancient ‘prophet of suffering’!
Since my recent episode of an allergic reaction, I can identify with Job ‘scratching all over’ with a piece of pottery. Third week of March 2013, I had a very bad allergic reaction to an ‘unknown’ food; beginning Friday night. The hives covered my face, arms, legs, back…literally from head to foot. From that day on, every morning I woke up to find myself engulfed with more and more hives. That is when my scratching began. I literally felt like Job scratching all over.
They did not appear all over suddenly, but over a period of 3-4 days. They increased day by day.But since I was warned by my wife and others repeatedly not to scratch severely, i began to massage all over, a milder way of scratching, kind of! On occasions, I felt like a monkey. Again, with medication, they began to subside over a period of 3-4 days, but quite gradually. My episode lasted just about a week.
But my ‘mild scratching’ never ceased until the hives began to disappear. Now I know how hard it would have been for Job, whose ‘boils’ were much more than mine both in number and severity/scratchiness. Note that it was Job himself scratching his own skin, nobody came to help, not even his own wife!
But in all his scratching, Job did not curse God or blame God. His own wife advised him to curse God and die. In fact, he thanked God for the ‘bad’ from God! His trust and hope in God never diminished even a little bit. As a result, we see that Job had a hundred fold blessings towards the end of his life on earth. He understood God better in and through his sufferings.
Today, I thank God, I am healed completely. No more scratching. I am able to share this testimony today because I went through the scratching season for a little while.
Scratching is not good in any way or form. In this short life, we all do some kind of ‘scratching’ one time or other for various reasons. It may be sickness, loss of a loved one, loss of a job/business, a hard decision to make, etc. It may look longer, but it will not be forever. Hold on, hang on, keep on, wait on, trust on…..you will be out of it soon.
Never, never curse or blame somebody else for what is happening to you right now. The first step toward success is to assume responsibility for yourself, your actions, and your decisions. That is where many successful people of today were found to be in one day in their lives. They did not stay there but used it as a stepping stone for success.
Success is not all that is there in life for a child of God. It is knowing God intimately and proclaiming God to others. The reason for the suffering(s) that you are going through may be to know God better, on a very personal level. May be it is time to look up!
Hold on, hang on, wait on, trust on, follow and love…..the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.
